How it Started
On March 23, 2017, Campbell Junior High Schools Youth Services Center was given a donation of $1000.00 form the Partners In Education, or P.I.E.. Three years ago the Youth Services Center partnered with the school Nurse, Tara Cruse, to start a food ministry for the students and families of Campbell Junior High. We could see the need within our school just by listening to our students. Nurse Cruse began by keeping food at her church, Grace Bible Church, and leaving on her lunch hour to get food and bring it back to school for families to pick up. The YSC Coordinator, Martina Hensley, observed this and questioned her about her passion to feed the hungry students and their families. Mrs. Hensley offered to let her house the food in her office so she wouldn't need to leave school on her lunch hour to fix a box of food. From there, the two began an exciting journey to start up a food pantry to serve these students and to eventually expand to the rest of the schools. The Principal, Mr. Howard, allowed a small storage closet to be transformed into the first food pantry. The YSC bought a deep freeze and shelving, a community member donated a refrigerator and so it was born!
Since then, our school does food drives, a ladies group at Central Baptist Church brings food, and other community members and organizations have donated money to keep the Food Pantry and Clothing Bank up and running. Mr. Howard has given the YSC two separate classrooms to house all the donations. Mrs. Hensley and Nurse Cruse have even helped to start a food pantry at George Rogers Clark High School. When a referral is made we can now provide food and clothing to families in all nine schools. This has grown with the help of our caring community and businesses. Love has found a way!
